A few years back (ok, 35 of them to be exact), my parents and I visited my brother in Denver for the holidays. At that time Denver was a relatively small city and I was a mere 16.

On Christmas day I went for a walk on the snowy, empty streets. I saw no one for most of my walk, but then became aware of a "street person" behind me and felt myself filling with fear. I was not used to walking city streets alone, much less having a less-than-pleasant looking man behind me.

I stopped, glanced in a window, then doubled back. He turned around also. My heart began beating loudly as I tried to remain cool and figure out what to do. The traffic light was red, and even though there wasn't a car in sight, I obeyed the light and waited on the corner, not knowing what to expect.

As he came upon me, he reached for my hand, turned it over and placed a nickle in it. Smiling, he softly said "Merry Christmas," turned and silently trotted off down the street. I stood there is disbelief, then began to cry.

His gift, while so simple, touched me so deeply and still does to this day.May your holidays be filled with sincere feelings and lasting memories.
