- Face Transplant at the Cleveland Clinic
Surgeons and doctors from 12 different specialties at the Cleveland Clinic worked for 22 hours to perform the first near-total face transplant in the United States, the lead surgeon, Dr. Maria Siemionow, said today at a news conference. The patient, a woman who was not identified, had suffered severe facial trauma several years earlier. Only the woman's upper eyelids, forehead, lower lip and chin were left -- the rest of her face was replaced with one donated from a female cadaver. The donor also was not identified.
