- VUU president resigning position
In a move she described as being in the university's best interest, Belinda Childress Anderson said yesterday that she will resign as president of Virginia Union University. Anderson said in a statement that she wants "to make way for the university to secure new leadership positioned to meet new challenges." Anderson said she had notified Frank Royal, chairman of the university's board of trustees, of her decision. - AROUND CAMPUS
Scott Nelson, a history professor at the College of William and Mary, has won the American Folklore Society's Aesop Award for his children's book, "Ain't Nothing but a Man." "Scott Nelson's outstanding work is a meticulously documented historiography of his lengthy search to find the historical roots of the legend of John Henry, rather than a retelling of the well-known story and song," the society said in announcing the prize. - Maynor stars, but Rams fall
There was the last-second shot in the NCAA tournament that beat Duke, which stands alone at the top of Eric Maynor moments. Then there was last night, which may top the rest. The only problem was it came in a losing cause. With his father, George, a former East Carolina star sitting behind the bench, Maynor scored a career-high 35 points before fouling out on a charge with 10 seconds left in overtime. He had 27 after intermission and almost single-handedly brought VCU back from a nine-point deficit, but the Rams fell 93-90 to East Carolina. - Liberty stuns lackluster Cavs
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- As University of Virginia fans trudged toward the exits, disbelief etched on their faces, the section behind the visiting team's bench stayed full. Nobody associated with Liberty men's basketball wanted the moment to end, and who could blame them? Some 10 years after the Flames stunned U.Va. at University Hall, they repeated the feat at John Paul Jones Arena. - Rough ride
BLACKSBURG Reality stings the most. But for a moment, Virginia Tech quarterbacks coach Mike O'Cain forgets what has happened and considers how Sean Glennon's career might have unfolded if not for an offensive line that has struggled in pass protection the past two seasons, if not for the Hokies relying on three freshman wide receivers this season. - Skins need to score and win
Little is required for an NFL team to feel as though it is on the road to success. The Washington Redskins lost to Pittsburgh and Dallas in successive weeks. They were down. They beat Seattle in Seattle, and now the Redskins feel they are on the rise. The Redskins have designs on the playoffs, and winning in Seattle is not nearly as significant as losing at home to Pittsburgh and Dallas. - Benching McNabb not the solution
PHILADELPHIA Nothing good is going to come from Andy Reid's latest head-scratching decision. Putting Donovan McNabb behind center for tonight's game against Arizona will not save the Eagles' season, and it will not change the grim realities facing the franchise once 2009 gets here. The decision, announced at a tense little news conference Monday, was based on circumstances and not commitment. It would be folly to start Kevin Kolb after a short practice week -- folly even greater than throwing the young quarterback into the fire against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. - U.Va. hopes to play spoiler
Give University of Virginia safety Byron Glaspy points for honesty. He acknowledged yesterday what many of his teammates no doubt have been saying privately: that depriving Virginia Tech of a trip to Tampa, Fla., for the ACC championship game would make a U.Va. victory that much sweeter Saturday. "I've thought about that," Glaspy said with a smile. "That'd be a nice thing to do: send them home unhappy." - Alexander the Expendable is cut
Redskins coach Jim Zorn has said for the past month that having four running backs on the roster was a luxury. As of yesterday, it's a luxury the team will have to do without. Running back Shaun Alexander's stint with the Redskins will end with 24 yards on 11 attempts. He was released by the team to make room for defensive tackle Ryan Boschetti, who spent several years in Washington as a backup. - Butler, Wizards start Tapscott era with victory
WASHINGTON - Ed Tapscott's coaching debut with the Washington Wizards was much more successful than Jamal Crawford's playing debut with the Golden State Warriors. Tapscott guided the Wizards to a 124-100 blowout last night, breaking a five-game losing streak and avoiding the worst 12-game start in franchise history. Caron Butler scored a season-high 35 points, Andray Blatche had season highs with 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Antawn Jamison added 25 points and 11 rebounds as the Wizards improved to 2-10 with their best scoring output of the season. Their 124 points topped any number achieved in the first 11 games under Eddie Jordan, who was fired Monday and replaced by Tapscott, who had been the team's director of player development. - TODAY'S RADIO

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans have placed running back Ahman Green on season-ending injured reserve after he hurt his left knee against Cleveland. The 31-year-old former Green Bay star was injured in the third quarter of Sunday's win over the Browns. Green had had 294 yards and a 4-yard average in eight games this season after gaining 260 yards and averaging 3.7 yards while missing 10 games last year. - ON THIS DATE
1956 -- In the Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia, Vyacheslav Ivanov of the Soviet Union wins the gold medal in the single sculls. The way Mike Ayers figures it, the NCAA selection committee for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs was so impressed with what his Wofford team did in 2007, it upped the ante. "Last year, we went out to Montana to play the number two [seeded] team, and evidently they wanted to see what we could do against the number one team this year," said Ayers, whose Terriers knocked off the Grizzlies 23-22 in the opening round.
